Ingredients

1 c. dates, cut fine
1 c. hot water
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
1 Tbsp. butter
1 c. flour
1 egg
1 c. chopped nuts
several bananas
whipped topping
Preparation

Pour water over dates and soda.
Let stand until cool.
Add sugar, butter, flour, egg and nuts; mix well.
Bake like a cake on a greased 11 x 14-inch or larger pan in a 325\u00b0 oven for about 35 minutes, or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
When cool, cut in 1-inch squares.
Alternate layers of cake, sliced bananas and whipped topping in a large bowl or individual containers.
Garnish with bananas.
Assemble near serving time, as bananas quickly discolor and soften.
