Chocolate Covered Cherry Cake - cooking recipe

1/2 c. butter or margarine, softened
2 c. sugar
4 eggs, separated
2 c. all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 c. milk
1 c. chopped walnuts
1 c. chopped maraschino cherries (reserve juice for frosting)
Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and lightly flour a 9x13x2 inch baking pan. In large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar.
Add the egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine
the flour and baking powder in a small bowl. Stir to mix. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with the milk, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Stir in the walnuts and cherries. Beat the egg whites until stiff. Fold into the batter. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into center of layer. While cake bakes, make the frosting.
