Cold Water Dill Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    8 c. cold water
    3/4 c. pickling salt
    2 c. 5% or 6% vinegar (can use full strength)
    1/4 tsp. powdered alum (2 lumps)
    4 large sprigs fresh dill
    1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
    2 more dill sprigs (for top)
    cucumbers (enough for several qt. or pt.)
Preparation
    Full strength cider vinegar from health store is best.
