French Apple Crumb Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. flour
    1 c. sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. salt
    3 Tbsp. vegetable shortening
    1 egg, well beaten
    2 c. sweetened applesauce
    2 c. brown sugar
Preparation
    Preheat oven to 300\u00b0.
    Mix and sift dry ingredients into a mixing bowl.
    Cut in the shortening until crumbly.
    Add the egg, mixing well.
    Press half of the mixture into a greased 8-inch square pan.
    Spread with the applesauce and lightly press the remaining dough mixture over the sauce.
    Sprinkle with the brown sugar.
    Bake 45 minutes, then turn off oven; open oven door a little and let cake sit another 30 minutes.
    Cut into bars while warm.
    Serve with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired. Favorite spices may be added to the applesauce as well.
    Serves 8.
