Ingredients

loaf of soft, spongy white bread
1 1/2 c. biscuit mix
1 Tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1 beaten egg
3/4 c. milk
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
grated lemon peel (optional)
Preparation

Cut crusts off 8 slices of bread and cut them in quarters. Mix rest of ingredients together.
Dip each piece of bread into the batter, using a two-tined fork.
Deep-fat fry until browned. Drain them thoroughly and roll them in granulated sugar.
