Depression Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. sugar
    2 c. strong coffee
    1/2 c. shortening
    2 c. raisins
    1 apple, peeled and grated
    1 c. chopped walnuts
    2 c. all-purpose flour
    1 tsp. baking soda
    2 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. each: cinnamon, allspice, cloves and nutmeg
Preparation
    In a large saucepan, simmer the first five ingredients for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    Cool 10 minutes. Blend together the remaining ingredients and stir into mixture.
    Pour into a well-greased and floured 13 x 9-inch pan.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 25 to 30 minutes.
    Cool and dust with powdered sugar, if desired.
