Polly'S Pickles * - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    25 to 30 small cucumbers
    2 c. lime (calcium hydroxide)
    2 gal. water
    6 c. sugar
    2 tsp. whole cloves
    1 tsp. salt
    2 qt. white vinegar
Preparation
    Slice cucumbers 1/8-inch thick.
    Dissolve lime in water in a glass, stone or stainless steel container.
    Add cucumbers, being sure that cucumbers are covered with liquid.
    Let stand 24 hours. Rinse well, let stand 3 hours in clear water and drain.
    Mix vinegar, sugar, cloves and salt.
    Pour over cucumbers and let stand overnight.
    Bring to boil, and boil 35 minutes.
    Fill sterilized jars to 1/2-inch of top.
    Seal, boil jars in hot water bath for 5 minutes. Chill pickles before serving.
