Boston Baked Beans - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 c. dried white pea beans
    3/4 lb. salt pork
    1 large onion, peeled
    2 Tbsp. tomato paste
    2 Tbsp. cider vinegar
    powdered cloves
    1/2 c. molasses (dark)
    2 tsp. salt
    1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
    1 c. dark brown sugar
Preparation
    Soak beans overnight; drain.
    Put in a large kettle and cover with fresh water by 2 inches.
    Bring slowly to a boil; reduce heat to simmer and cook gently until beans are almost tender.
    Drain, saving the cooking water
