Date Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. dates, cut in small pieces
    1/2 c. water
    2 1/2 c. sifted flour
    1 1/2 tsp. soda
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. cloves
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    3/4 c. shortening
    3/4 c. sugar
    2 eggs
    2/3 c. buttermilk or sour milk
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1/2 c. chopped nuts
Preparation
    Cook dates in water over low heat, stirring occasionally, until smooth and thick.
    Cool.
    Sift dry ingredients together. Cream shortening and sugar.
    Add unbeaten eggs.
    Stir in date mixture.
    Combine milk and vanilla.
    Add alternately with dry ingredients to creamed mixture (slow speed on mixer).
    Stir in nuts.
