Ingredients

5 onions, sliced
2 1/2 Tbsp. butter
3 (10 1/2 oz. each) cans beef broth
1 3/4 c. water
1 bay leaf
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/4 tsp. thyme
5 slices (3/4 to 1-inch thick) French bread
5 oz. Swiss cheese, grated (1 1/4 c.)
1/3 c. Parmesan cheese, grated
Preparation

Cover and cook onion in butter in saucepan over low heat until tender, 20 to 30 minutes.
Add broth, water, bay leaf, pepper and thyme.
Heat to boiling; cover and reduce heat to simmer 15 minutes.
