Apple Dumplings - cooking recipe

1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. water
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
3 Tbsp. butter
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2/3 c. solid shortening
1/2 c. milk
6 apples, cored
Preparation

Combine the first 4 ingredients; bring to a boil.
Stir in butter.
Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Add milk all at once; stir only until dry ingredients are moistened.
Roll to 1/4-inch thickness on floured surface.
Cut into six 6-inch squares.
Place apple in center of each; sprinkle each generously with cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg.
Dot with butter.
Moisten edges of squares and fold corners to center; pinch together.
Place one inch apart in an 11 1/2 x 7-inch pan.
Bake for 1 hour at 350\u00b0.
