"No-Marinade" Sauerbraten - cooking recipe

4 lb. rump roast
salt and pepper
flour
2 Tbsp. shortening
2 onions, sliced
1/2 c. vinegar
1 c. water
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
3 bay leaves
3 whole cloves
2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
2 Tbsp. catsup
6 large or 12 small gingersnaps
