Crock Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 gal. cucumbers
    2 gal. water
    4 c. salt
    1/2 c. alum
    1 box pickling spice
    1 gal. vinegar
    10 lb. sugar
Preparation
    Soak cucumbers in salt water for 6 days; drain.
    Rinse in cold water.
    Slice and soak in 1/2 cup alum to 1 1/2 gallons of water for 2 days.
    Rinse alum water off.
    Soak overnight in 1 gallon of vinegar; pour vinegar off.
    Put pickling spice (tie up in cloth) in bottom of jar or crock.
    Add 1 layer of cucumbers and 1 layer of sugar; repeat until you've used 10 pounds of sugar.
