Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gal. cucumbers (2 1/2 inches long)
    8 small onions
    1/2 c. salt
    1 qt. crushed ice
    5 c. sugar
    1/2 tsp. ground cloves
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    1 tsp. celery seed
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
    5 c. vinegar
Preparation
    Wash cucumbers but don't pare.
    Slice crosswise in thin slices. Slice onions thin.
    Mix salt with cucumbers and onions and place crushed ice in mixture.
    Cover and let stand for 3 hours.
    Drain thoroughly.
    Mix sugar, spices and vinegar; pour over pickles. Place over low heat and stir occasionally.
    Heat the mixture to scalding, but don't boil.
    Pour into hot jars and seal.
