Mother'S Patience Candy - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 c. sugar
    1 c. canned milk
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Melt 1 cup sugar in a pan.
    Stir as needed to keep mixture from sticking to the pan.
    In a saucepan, combine remaining sugar and milk.
    Bring to a boil; then, reduce heat.
    When the first sugar is melted, pour it slowly into the milk mixture and cook to a soft ball stage.
    Remove pan from the heat.
    Pour in the vanilla.
    Stir thoroughly.
    Cool for ten minutes.
    Stir until the candy mixture loses its gloss and begins to get firm.
    Pour onto a buttered cookie sheet or into a rectangular casserole dish.
    Let the candy harden; then cut into small squares.
