Old English Crumb Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 cups flour
    1/2 cup shortening
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    1 cup sour milk
    1 cup brown sugar
    1/2 tsp. nutmeg
    1 tsp. soda
    1/4 tsp. salt
Preparation
    Mix sugar, spices, flour and shortening together just as you would pie dough, blending with pastry blender or knives until coarse mealy mixture.
    Take out 1/2 cup full.
    Into the balance add the sour milk and soda and beat very well. Pour this into a square pan and spread over the top the 1/2 cup of crumbs.
    You may also add nut meat finely chopped to the top. Bake in moderate oven about 30 minutes. Do not remove from pan, but let stand so the crumb top will be kept intact.
    (No eggs used in this recipe.)
