Granny Gibbs' Lye Soap - cooking recipe
Ingredients
-
2 qt. water
2 cans lye
1/2 c. Sal soda
2/3 c. liquid ammonia
4 Tbsp. Borax
4 Tbsp. granulated white sugar
Preparation
-
In granite dishpan, put the water.
Add the remaining ingredients.
Let cool to 80°.
Then weigh 10 pounds of fat, melted and strained through a cloth.
Heat to 100°.
Pour fat very slowly into 80° lye solution, stirring all the time you are pouring.
Stir until it is the consistency of nice, thick cream.
Stand until it begins to harden, then cut into bars.
Put in boxes.
Cover with cloth.
The longer it stays, the whiter it gets and the better it performs.
