French Onion Casserole - cooking recipe

8 (3/4 inch) slices French bread
butter
2 large onions, thinly sliced and separated into rings
2 Tbsp. butter
2 c. shredded Swiss cheese
1 (10 3/4 oz.) can cream of chicken soup
2/3 c. evaporated milk
1/4 tsp. pepper
Preparation

Spread about 1 teaspoon butter on 1 side of each slice of French bread.
Set aside.
Cook the sliced onions in 2 tablespoons butter about 10 minutes or until onions are tender but not brown, stirring often.
Transfer the onions to a 12 x 7 x 2-inch baking dish.
Sprinkle the Swiss cheese over the onions.
Mix the chicken soup, evaporated milk, and pepper until well blended.
Pour the soup mixture evenly over the cheese layer.
Layer the bread slices, buttered side up, over the soup mixture.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 30 minutes or until thoroughly heated and bread slices are golden brown.
