Sopa De Fido - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 Tbsp. shortening
    1/2 lb. vermicelli noodles, broken in small pieces
    1 lb. ground beef (or more)
    3/4 tsp. minced garlic
    2 c. thinly sliced onion
    1/2 c. finely chopped green pepper
    2 c. thinly sliced celery
    1 1/2 c. whole corn
    1 Tbsp. salt
    1 tsp. pepper
    1 to 3 tsp. chili powder
    1 (No. 2 1/2) can tomatoes
    1 c. water
    8 oz. American cheese slices
Preparation
    Preheat large skillet to 300\u00b0.
    Melt shortening, brown vermicelli until brown.
    Stir occasionally adding beef and cook until beef loses red color.
    Stir in next 8 ingredients; add tomatoes and water.
    Stir.
    Set temperature to 200\u00b0.
    Simmer 35 minutes.
    Cover top with cheese slices and cook 5 minutes.
    Serves 12.
