Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    12 large or 15 medium cucumbers
    5 c. sliced onions
    2 tsp. salt
    2 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    1 red pepper, chopped fine
    1 qt. vinegar
    4 c. sugar
    1 tsp. nutmeg
    4 sticks cinnamon
Preparation
    Sprinkle salt over cucumbers and onions.
    Let stand 1 hour. Drain well.
    Place in a deep kettle with sugar, vinegar and spices.
    Cook slowly over simmer burner until the sugar is dissolved, then turn burner up full and boil rapidly until the slices begin to glisten (about 30 minutes).
    Pack in hot jars, fill with hot liquid and seal.
