Russian Soldiers Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/4 lb. butter
    3 large onions
    1 large cabbage, shredded
    3 lb. stew beef
    4 large potatoes, sliced
    1 pkg. carrots, sliced
    3 tsp. pepper
    salt to taste
    water to cover or beef broth
    sour cream
Preparation
    Melt butter in large soup kettle.
    Add onions and cabbage and cook 5 minutes.
    Add all other ingredients, except sour cream. Cook several hours, at least 2, simmering.
