English Toffee - cooking recipe

2 1/4 c. sugar
1/2 lb. margarine
10 oz. (2 c.) sliced almonds
1/2 c. water
1/2 lb. butter
1/2 c. white syrup
melted Hershey bars and chopped nuts (to cover candy)
Preparation

Using a minimum 5-quart heavy gauge pan, stir the above ingredients until the sugar and butter are melted. Allow it to come to a rolling boil and cook without stirring until it reaches the hard-crack stage. This is tricky, but is indicated by smoke coming up and the color turning much darker. If undercooked, it will not harden and if overcooked, it will have a burned taste. Good luck.
