Winter Bean Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 lb. beans (mixed)
    ham hocks or ham bone
    1 c. chopped onion
    1 c. chopped celery
    1 qt. tomatoes
    1 tsp. chili powder
    1 tsp. lemon juice
    1 Tbsp. sugar
    salt and pepper to taste
    pinch of baking soda
Preparation
    Wash beans well and cover with 6 to 8 cups hot water; bring to a boil for 2 minutes.
    Remove from heat and let stand 1 hour. Drain.
    Add 2 quarts cold water and ham bone.
    Simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
    Add the remaining ingredients and let simmer for 30 minutes or until tender.
    Serves 6.
