Grandma'S Sauerbraten - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. vinegar
    1 1/2 tsp. salt
    dash of pepper
    1/2 c. sugar
    1 1/2 c. water
    1 (3 lb.) roast (top or bottom round)
    2 Tbsp. pickling spice
    1 c. chopped onions
    1 Tbsp. shortening (to brown meat)
    1/2 lb. gingersnaps
    4 Tbsp. flour
Preparation
    Marinate meat at least 2 days in water, vinegar, onions, pickling spice, sugar, salt and pepper.
    Simmer meat in marinade 3 to 4 hours until tender (i.e. cook like pot roast after browning meat).
    Turn occasionally.
    Strain gravy.
    Brown flour in a pan, then add to gravy mix.
    Put in gingersnaps and meat to thicken gravy.
