Italian Cream Cheese Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. sugar
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 stick butter
    1 tsp. baking soda
    5 eggs, separated
    2 c. flour
    1/2 c. coconut
    1/2 c. pecans, chopped
    1 tsp. vanilla extract
    1 c. buttermilk
Preparation
    Stir baking soda into buttermilk and set aside.
    Cream butter, shortening and sugar.
    Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each addition.
    Add buttermilk alternately with flour, beginning and ending with flour.
    Fold in coconut, pecans and vanilla extract.
    Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form, but not dry. Fold into batter.
    Pour into 3 greased and floured 9-inch cake pans.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 25 minutes.
    Cool layers completely before icing cake.
