Sweet Icicle Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. salt
    20 cucumbers (quartered)
    1 1/2 Tbsp. mixed pickling spices
    5 c. sugar
    2 qt. water
    2 tsp. powdered alum
    5 c. vinegar
Preparation
    Put cucumber strips in a stone jar or stainless steel container.
    Add salt to boiling water.
    Pour over cucumbers. Cover with plate. Fill quart jar with water and use to hold plate under brine.
    Cover with cloth and let stand for 1 week (cool place).
    Remove scum daily.
