Nine Day Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 box salt
    1 tsp. alum per gallon of water
    1 Tbsp. allspice per gallon of vinegar
    vinegar
    sugar
Preparation
    Soak cucumbers 24 hours in salt water (one box salt).
    Soak 24 hours in powdered alum water (1 teaspoon per gallon of water). Soak 24 hours in clear water.
    Soak for 5 days in vinegar and allspice (1 tablespoon per gallon of vinegar).
    Take pickles out on fifth day, slice, and pack in plastic or enamel pan a layer of pickles and a layer of sugar.
    Let stand until pickles have absorbed all the sugar.
    Pack in jars and fill with liquid out of pickles.
