Gingerbread - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. butter or shortening
    1/2 c. granulated sugar
    1 egg, beaten
    2 1/2 c. flour (sifted)
    1 1/2 tsp. soda
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    1 tsp. ginger
    1/2 tsp. cloves
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 c. molasses
    1 c. hot water
Preparation
    Cream shortening and sugar.
    Add beaten egg.
    Measure and sift dry ingredients.
    Mix molasses with hot water.
    Add dry ingredients alternately with liquid, a little at a time, beat after each addition.
    Bake in paper-lined pan, 9 x 9 x 2-inches, in moderate oven (350\u00b0) for 45 minutes.
    Makes 16 portions.
