Black Walnut Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. soft butter
    1/2 c. shortening
    2 c. sugar
    5 eggs, separated
    2 c. flour
    1 c. buttermilk
    1 tsp. soda
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 1/2 c. chopped walnuts
    1 (3 oz.) can coconut
    1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
Preparation
    Cream butter and shortening in bowl until light and fluffy. Add sugar gradually.
    Blend in egg yolks.
    Add flour alternately with buttermilk mixed with the soda.
    Stir in vanilla, walnuts and coconut.
    Beat egg whites with cream of tartar until stiff peaks form.
    Fold egg whites into batter.
    Put into 3 greased and floured 9-inch pans.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 until cake pulls from side of pan.
    Frost with cream cheese frosting.
