1 c. melted shortening
3 c. sugar
5 c. flour
2 Tbsp. salt
4 eggs, beaten
5 tsp. soda
1 qt. buttermilk
3 c. sifted flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
3 Tbsp. butter or shortening
3 eggs
1/4 c. sugar
1/3 c. water (approximate)
cooking oil (for frying)
cinnamon sugar (see following) or honey
Preparation

When the small pieces of dough are cooked in hot oil, they puff out and form bread with a crisp crust and hollow center.
They are served hot, coated with honey or rolled in cinnamon sugar.
