Ingredients

1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 (7 1/4 oz.) pkg. pitted dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. boiling water
1/4 c. butter or margarine
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 c. broken pecan meats
Preparation

Sift flour, baking powder and salt together.
Cut up dates in a mixing bowl.
Sprinkle soda over them and add boiling water.
Stir a few times and let stand.
Cream shortening and sugar; beat in egg.
Mix in flour, then date mixture and nuts.
Pour into greased 9-inch square pan and bake at 300\u00b0 for 1 hour.
Cool in pan.
Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.
Makes 9 (3-inch) squares. Freezes well.
