Lady Baltimore Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 c. sifted cake flour
    3 tsp. baking powder
    3/4 c. shortening
    1/2 c. milk
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2 c. sugar
    1/2 c. water
    6 eggs
Preparation
    Sift flour, baking powder and salt together.
    Cream shortening with sugar until fluffy.
    Combine milk, water and vanilla.
    Add sifted dry ingredients and liquid alternately in small amounts, beating well after each addition.
    Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry and fold into batter.
    Pour into greased pans and bake in moderate 350\u00b0 oven for 25 minutes.
    Cool.
    Spread filling between layers and cover top and sides with divinity icing.
    Makes 3 (9-inch) layers.
