Seven-Layer Salad - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2/3 head lettuce, broken small
    1/2 c. bell pepper
    1/2 c. celery
    1/2 c. sweet onions or green onions
    1 small can water chestnuts, sliced
    1 pkg. frozen English peas
Preparation
    Place in oblong 9 x 13-inch pan in order listed.
    Mix 2 cups mayonnaise with 1 tablespoon sugar.
    Spread over salad.
    (This seals the moisture in.)
    Refrigerate overnight.
    Before serving, spread with 1/2 cup grated cheese.
