No Seal Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    14 lb. cucumbers
    10 lb. sugar
    3 Tbsp. alum
    apple cider vinegar
    2 Tbsp. mixed spice
Preparation
    Cut up cucumbers.
    Cover in salt water, that will float an egg, for 8 days.
    Drain.
    Wash in clear water; soak overnight in alum water.
    Use 3 tablespoons of alum to 1 gallon of water.
    Wash and drain.
    Cover cucumbers in vinegar and soak for 6 hours.
    Drain off vinegar.
    Alternate layer of pickles, layer of sugar and 2 tablespoons mixed spice.
