Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    15 lb. cucumbers, sliced for pickles
    3/4 c. salt
    1 gal. water
    alum
    5% vinegar
    spices (1/2 can pickling spices or to taste)
    3 c. sugar
Preparation
    Soak cucumbers in solution of 3/4 cup salt to 1 gallon of water. Soak for 7 days. Drain and wash pickles and container. Cover with alum mixture (3 tablespoons alum to 1 quart water). Soak 24 hours, then drain and wash. Cover with vinegar and spices. Soak 24 hours. Drain and layer 3-inches of pickles and 3 cups sugar. Repeat layers.
