German Sauerbraten - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 to 4 lb. chuck or butt beef roast
    1 c. vinegar
    1 c. water
    1/2 tsp. black pepper
    1/4 tsp. whole cloves
    2 bay leaves
    1/8 tsp. ground ginger
    1 medium onion, sliced thin
    1/2 lemon, sliced thin
    1/4 c. sugar
    salt, pepper and shortening
Preparation
    Brown meat on all sides in hot shortening.
    Add remaining ingredients.
    Season with salt and pepper.
    Cover skillet or kettle and simmer slowly 2
    or 3 hours, until meat is tender.
    Add more water if necessary.
    Thicken gravy with flour for serving.
