Family Favorite Banana Pudding - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/4 c. sugar
    1 c. sugar
    1/3 c. flour
    dash of salt
    4 eggs, separated and at room temperature (this is very important)
    2 c. milk
    1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
    1 tsp. vanilla extract
    1 box Nabisco vanilla wafers (fresh)
    5 to 6 fully ripe bananas
    1 (12 oz.) carton Cool Whip (optional)
Preparation
    Use a 2-quart casserole dish.
    Combine dry ingredients (except 1/4 cup sugar) in saucepan.
    Blend slightly beaten yolks and milk well.
    Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened over medium heat.
    Don't leave the pot.
    Stir gently.
    Reduce heat to very low.
    Cook 5 minutes more.
    Add vanilla.
