Mawmaw Brumley'S 1-2-3-4 Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. butter or shortening
    2 c. sugar
    3 c. flour
    4 eggs, separated
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 tsp. salt
    3 tsp. baking powder
    1 c. milk
Preparation
    Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy.
    Add egg yolks, 1 at a time, beating thoroughly after each one.
    Sift dry ingredients together 3 times and add alternately with milk and vanilla to cream mixture.
    Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
    Pour into pans and bake in a moderate 350\u00b0 oven until tests done.
    If butter is used, omit salt.
    Ice with favorite icing.
