Caramels - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. butter or margarine
    1 (16 oz.) pkg. brown sugar (2 1/4 c. packed)
    dash of salt
    1 c. light corn syrup
    1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Butter a 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
    Melt the 1 cup butter or margarine in a heavy 3-quart saucepan.
    Add brown sugar and salt; stir thoroughly.
    Stir in corn syrup.
    Gradually add the sweetened condensed milk, stirring constantly.
    Clip candy thermometer to side of pan.
    Cook and stir over medium heat to 245\u00b0 (firm ball stage).
    Remove from heat; stir in vanilla.
    Pour into buttered 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
    When cooled, cut into squares.
    Wrap pieces individually in clear plastic wrap.
    Makes about 2 1/2 pounds.
