Sweet Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gal. jar full 1/4 inch cucumber slices
    1 c. coarse salt and cold water
    2 Tbsp. alum
    cider vinegar
    2 Tbsp. pickling spices
    9 c. sugar
Preparation
    Cover cucumber slices with alum and water for 24 hours; drain. Cover with vinegar and pickling spices for 24 hours.
    Drain off vinegar and spice.
    Add 3 cups of sugar for 3 days each.
    Turn jar upside down and shake occasionally to dissolve sugar.
    Pickles may be stored in this jar.
    Cover tightly.
    There will be almost enough liquid to cover pickles.
