Sue Hammer'S Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    20 to 25 medium cucumbers
    8 large white onions
    2 large green or red sweet peppers (optional)
    1/2 c. salt
    5 c. vinegar
    5 c. sugar
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
    1/2 tsp. cloves
    1 tsp. turmeric
Preparation
    Wash cucumbers and slice as thin as possible.
    Chop onions and peppers; combine cucumbers, onions and peppers.
    Mix salt in enough water to cover.
    Let stand 3 hours.
    Combine vinegar, sugar and spices.
    Bring to a boil.
    Add drained cucumbers, onions and peppers.
    Heat thoroughly but do not boil.
    Pack in sterilized hot jars.
    Cover with liquid and seal.
    Yield:
    12 to 15 pints.
